“A Waffle”

Artist Statement: “Because who doesn’t love a waffle?”

More about the piece: This work was created to answer the call for art from Tulsa Community College’s Center for Creativity. Their “Please Touch the Art” exhibit was made to be accessible to all, including those with impaired sight. The goal was to create something whimsical and universal, incorperating an additional sense- smell. The waffle was created using expanding foam and a real waffle maker and then painted and sealed-it is squishy to the touch. The syrup’s resin was colored with chalk pastel and scented with candle making oil. The resin was not sealed- creating a slightly tacky feel. The coffee cup is filled with colored resin as well, and both it and the wooden stir stick were coated in a coffee scented oil. The podium wiggled slightly at instillation, allowing for the perfect addition of sugar packets under the corner- reminecent of a dinner’s wobbly table.
